The road in is Paved. Frye Lake is open Summer, Fall. There are 30 or more Free Wyoming camping areas at this location and the maximum RV length is Any. You may stay 14 at Frye Lake. Frye Lake is in the Shashone National Forest about 15 miles out of Lander. Follow Sinks Canyon road to Louis Lake road 131. There are about seven switch backs up the mountain to Frye Lake. It is a paved road all the way.

The road in is Dirt. Sinks Canyon is open Spring, Summer, Fall. There are 6-15 boondocking spots in Wyoming at this location. About 8.5 miles up Sinks Canyon rood there is a free camp ground on the left just after the University of Missouri Field Camp. The dirt and Rock camp road is very rough but many campers still seem to get into the spaces. There are no amenities.

The road in is Gravel and One miles from a paved road. There are 1-5 boondocking spots in Wyoming at this location and the maximum RV length is 25 feet. An awesome enroute BLM spot worthy of further exploration. It’s located on an old highway grade viewpoint at the top of Beaver Divide, one mile off the new highway.
61. Loop Road Dispersed Camping – Hwy 131

This whole highway 131 ‘loop road’ allows Free Wyoming camping areas and there are tons of offshoot roads leading to sites with and without fire pits. There are paid campgrounds up this road too near the larger lakes, but the tiny streams have tiny fish that are fun to catch.

Paved road all the way but a bit bumpy. Each particular spot (see other sites nearby) can maybe accommodate 2-3 units. The shelter houses are nice but you can’t park close to them.

Sand Mesa WHMA – Alkali Bay is open all year. This is a free dispersed campsite. These boondocking spots in Wyoming do not use a reservation system. First come, first served. Just stayed here (July 2017). It was pretty and the lake was clean and warm. But then the mosquitos started around dusk and they were crazy! We had to take cover in our tent and at least 50 mosquitos were hovering on my window of the tent.

Great little lake, super quiet and off the beaten path. We stayed two nights, the water was amazing for swimming, so clear you can see all the way down!Lots of birds and a nice Sandy beach. We went all the way around the lake to the back side, with our Class A motor home, a little bumpy but otherwise made it just fine.

Hugh Otte Camping Area
Check out the Hugh Otte Camping Area if you’re looking for world-class hiking in Wyoming, Lander and the Wind River Range. It’s only 10 miles from Lander, making it one of Wyoming’s most popular free camping destinations. On weekdays, you’ll have the best chance of getting a spot. Hike to Bruce’s Bridge and explore the Popo Agie Falls Trail, both of which are close by.
Lander City Park Public Campground
The Lander City Park Public Campground takes a different approach to free camping. This free Wyoming campground is located close outside of downtown Lander, rather than dispersed camping in a national forest. Throughout the city park, there are no restrictions on the number of tent sites you can use. All sizes of RVs are welcome. Up to three nights of free camping are available. On-site restrooms and drinking water are available. Climbers flock to the campground to practice their skills.

Ashley National Forest
The Ashley National Forest provides many opportunities for Wyoming rv boondocking in developed campgrounds and dispersed camping. Opportunities for camping include:
Campground Camping: Nothing beats the traditional site where you can pull up your car, set up your tent, and have the family cooking hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire! Check out this List of Campground Camping Areas in Ashley National Forest.
Hugh Otte Campground
In the forest, there are numerous excellent campgrounds. While most are only open seasonally, the forest does include a few spots that are open all year. Campgrounds vary in elevation and geography, allowing campers to visit a variety of campgrounds in different areas.
Dispersed Camping: This camping is for the more rugged individuals that are ready to pack in their own water, pack out their trash, and get a little closer to nature. Check out this List of Dispersed Camping Areas in Wyoming – Hugh Otte
Camping is legal in undeveloped areas (aside from authorized campgrounds). Please use existing routes to access these undeveloped regions, and when using dispersed campsites in Wyoming in undeveloped areas. Observe the guidelines in “Caring for the Forest.” In Wyoming, camping in undeveloped areas must be within 300 feet of a defined road and authorized routes, and at least 1/4 mile away from any administrative location (boat ramps, guard stations, campgrounds, or visitor centers).

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest
Campfires are only allowed in permanent cement or metal fire rings built by the Forest Service in established areas. A pallet closure has been marked with signs prohibiting the use of any firewood material on the forest that contains nails, screws, or other metal hardware.
Dispersed Camping: Away from developed campgrounds and other campers, many individuals appreciate the isolation and primal experience of camping. Camping anyplace in the National Forest outside of an authorized campground is referred to as dispersed camping. Toilets, clean water, and fire grates are not supplied in dispersed camping.
Camping is permitted in dispersed sections of the Forest for fourteen (14) days in any thirty (30) day period. After the 14-day limit has been reached, campers must leave the Forest. Even if utilized by a different individual or group, the stay limit applies to all camping equipment (tents, chairs, ATVs, ATV trailers, and so on). Camping gear must be removed by the conclusion of the fourteen (14)-day stay restriction, or it will be impounded. Stay limits are in place to protect vegetation and wildlife habitat while also allowing other visitors access to popular camping areas.
Camping in Wyoming State Parks & Recreational Areas
Wyoming is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy camping. It is the least populated state in the USA and is home to two national parks (Yellowstone and Grand Teton), two national recreation areas, two national monuments, and several national forests. Not to mention the diversified landscape, which runs from the west’s mountains to the east’s high plains.
One of the most popular ways to enjoy Wyoming campgrounds is to camp in a tent. Wyoming has something for everyone, from modest, primitive camping to bustling campgrounds with a variety of facilities.
Sinks Canyon State Park
Sinks Canyon State Park is a fantastic spot for camping. The area’s most notable feature is the “Sinks,” where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River disappears into a limestone tunnel before resurfacing a quarter mile later. Sawmill Campground and Popo Agie Campground are two small campgrounds ideal for tent camping. The adjacent Sinks Canyon Campground is another option for exploring the area (which is really located in the Shoshone National Forest).
Firehole Canyon Campground (Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area)
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, which spans the Utah-Wyoming border, is managed by Ashley National Forest. The Flaming Gorge Reservoir is popular for boating and fishing, while the surrounding area is excellent for Wyoming hiking, rock climbing, and bicycling. Firehole Canyon Campground is a fantastic spot for dispersed campgrounds in Wyoming trip. This peaceful campground in Wyoming offers spacious campsites with panoramic views in all directions.
