45 Amazing Oklahoma Boondocking Locations Including Maps

When it comes to Oklahoma boondocking locations, there are few restrictions. Most national forests have a 14-day limit, but that’s about it. They’re also pretty liberal when it comes to urban camping. Most Oklahoma governments aren’t too severe about parking RVs in private lots overnight, so boondocking in Oklahoma isn’t too difficult if you don’t mind camping in the city. You can also sleep at rest stops along the highway, where there are no time limits or restrictions on who can camp.

Free Oklahoma Campsites on Public Land

The majority of dispersed campsites are operated by the US Forest Service, if you love the type of natural camping seen in places like state parks or wildlife management areas. Instead of national forests, you’ll be staring at the state’s national grassland because you’re in the Great Plains. Rita Blanca National Grassland in the Panhandle has a couple of these. Expect largely wide-open prairie, camping along a road, and surrounded by private farms, but picnic sites like Felt Picnic Area offer some cover and free RV parking. Please use the garbage cans supplied.

Oklahoma, being part of the Great Plains, is similar to its northern and southern neighbors in that it is primarily a long, flat length of land. Many of those bordering states can be traversed without seeing much more than oil rigs and farmland; but, Oklahoma does have a few more hilly sections, particularly in its western reaches. While Oklahoma camping spots aren’t exactly awash in resources, there are plenty of spots to camp for free all around the state.

Boondockers frequent public land owned by the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), or the state park system. These free locations might save you money on campsite and hotel fees, and they’re generally in more scenic areas. Unfortunately, Oklahoma does not have nearly as much of this land as many other states. The federal government owns less than 2% of the state, compared to approximately 67% in neighboring Utah. If you look hard enough, you can find a few pieces of public land!

Where to Boondock in SE Oklahoma

Between the camping gear, supplies, and any must-have camping goodies, camping prices may rapidly mount up. When you factor in the cost of a campsite, it can quickly become prohibitively expensive. If the cost of a campsite makes you squirm, there are several free camping choices available.

The best Oklahoma boondocking locations are on public property. Many of the Oklahoma campsites are open to dispersed camping, notwithstanding their limitations. Start with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation-managed locations; most of the approved public fishing places allow dry camping near lakes and rivers. The Lower Illinois River, Kiamichi River Access Area, and Arcadia CEA are the only exceptions. You can only camp at approved dispersed sites if you’re going to a fishing area. These camping spots can be found all around Oklahoma, usually far from large cities.

The Ouachita National Forest, which borders the Oklahoma-Arkansas line, is another possibility of Oklahoma camping spots. You can camp anywhere in the national forest as long as there are no signs prohibiting you from doing so. You must stay within 150 feet of a road and at least 100 feet of a water source, according to the Forest Service. Campfires are permitted only in designated fire rings. Keep a safe distance from any established places, such as trailheads and picnic spots.

Go Boondocking in Western Oklahoma

The Sooner State is known for its tumbleweeds, tornadoes, and, of course, the Tiger King himself. The majority of people are unaware that Oklahoma is a state with parched high plains in the panhandle, bison-infested prairie in the center, and lush woods in the southwest corner. You can probably find whatever kind of terrain you’re looking for in Oklahoma boondocking locations.

Oklahoma is one of the most affordable holiday destinations because it is a lesser-known region. Attractions and restaurants are far less expensive, and there are no camping fees when using Oklahoma campsites.

When it comes to boondocking, Oklahoma has few restrictions. Most national forests have a 14-day limit, but that’s about it. They’re also pretty liberal when it comes to urban camping. Most Oklahoma camping spots aren’t too severe about parking RVs in private lots overnight, so boondocking in Oklahoma isn’t too difficult if you don’t mind camping in the city. You can also sleep at rest stops along the highway, where there are no time limits or restrictions on who can camp.
