Alabama boondocking locations would not be the first thing people think when thinking of Alabama, but the “Heart of Dixie” sure does indeed have a great deal of them! Be sure and search for a Corps of Engineers campgrounds map for the entire state of Alabama to find more spots.

Alabama has a lot to give boondockers, with its north and northeast mountains, Gulf Coast in the southern, and biggest urban city, Birmingham in the middle. If you’re looking for Alabama boondocking locations, you’ll discover plenty of fantastic boondocking spots throughout the state.

You won’t have all the conveniences of an RV campground when boondocking, also known as dispersed camping. Many RVers, though, are drawn to the option to be self-sufficient and off the grid. Boondocking is a fantastic way to reconnect with nature in some of Alabama’s most beautiful forests and parks. Remember that Alabama campgrounds are widespread, and spots are normally first-come, first-served, so show up early and explore other options if spots are already taken.

Visitors can enjoy free camping across the Cotton State, from national forest camping locations to a bevy of Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds. When you’re looking for a cheap site to camp near Alabama’s Gulf Coast, your choices are restricted to a Shopping center parking lot or a roadside rest station. This was a great spot. If you car camping, you’ll be right on the road, but barely any cars drove by. Flat ground in a large dirt lot, with a porta john. There are also really nice places to camp if you walk a ways in to the trails, but it’s a bit of a hike. And the hiking is really cool to! Waterfalls at the end of the 3.5 mile trail. I thought this was one of the better Alabama boondocking locations I visited.

1. Big Oak Hunter Camp

The only physically disabled hunting area in the Talladega National Forest. This camp is a 1700 acre hunting unit for physically disabled hunters possessing the required State permits in Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area.

2. 1 Car Camp By Creek

Drive down gravel road short ways. Just after you cross a bridge over a small creek there is a small campsite on your right just big enough for one car. Great Free Alabama camping spots with a pit and right next to the creek. The turn off from the road is pretty steep but I was able to get up it with my 2wd.

No water, electric, outhouse etc. quiet with lots of space between sites. Room for large RV or Trailer, if you don’t have 4wd park in the first spot on right or next spot on left, especially if ground is wet.

Really nice rest stop Free Alabama camping spots right across the MS state line in Alabama. Huge spaces for RV parking and almost feels like a camp with all the trees around. We didn’t stay overnight here but assume you can with all the truck parking.

Not sure why this gem is not on Free Campsites it is one of the best Alabama boondocking locations I found. Rest areas are generally noisy and not our preferred stop while traveling but this one is far from your average rest area. the welcome center is architecturally beautiful and the parking areas huge with several paved and well lighted parking lots f.
