NW Nebraska Boondocking Spots
Nebraska boondocking spots offer some of the best primitive camping sites in the state. There’s nothing like a tent, a campfire, the outdoors, and virtually nothing else for a true nature-loving camper.
Did you know that Nebraska’s tallest waterfall and its darkest night skies are barely an hour apart? Both sites have excellent camping opportunities, so whichever one you choose, you will not be disappointed.
Camping is one of the few situations when you can truly say you’re alone with nature. Regardless, it doesn’t really matter how you camp because we can probably all agree on one thing: it’s one of the best pastimes out there. So, grab your tent or hook up your camper trailer, because you’ll want to check out these fantastic places to sleep beneath the stars in Nebraska!

Jeffrey Canyon/Reservoir WMA is open all year. Nebraska boondocking sites. First come -> First Camped. Reservations not accepted. There is a very steep and short hill at the beginning of this road followed immediately by a barbed wire fence across the road. So, we did not camp here.

Unnamed Road
Brady, Nebraska
GPS: 40.997912, -100.425851
Elevation: 2661′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Free Nebraska boondocking spots. This campsite does not use a reservation system. First come, first served. So… No. The GPS location took me past or possibly onto and private farm area. Beautiful, but not a spot to camp in my opinion. However, prior to reaching this gps location, while on Fort Mcpherson Rd there are two spots to pull off on the right. One is before a sign on the left “Conroy’s Grave” and the second is right at this sign. Both are very small but would accommodate one rig our size (35 ft). The first lot is pretty steep getting in so we wouldn’t park there, the second is smooth and the lot is slightly larger. These both seem to be parking for hunters.
4. Gilbert – Baker WMA

There are three picnic tables here in enough room for several vehicles. The adjacent stream has small fish in it, I was told there are trout.
5. Box Elder Canyon WMA
Address

Maxwell, Nebraska
GPS: 41.027482, -100.572769
Elevation: 2776′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Free Nebraska camping places in Box Elder Canyon WMA is open all year. This is a parking area for a WMA hunting area. The site is gravel with a barbed wire fence and not much room but we fit 3 motorcycles with tents inside. Scenery is descent, traffic on the road was moderate. This is a WMA for hunters and I would not stay outside the fenced area for safety reasons.
6. West Maxwell WMA
Address
Government Road
Maxwell, Nebraska
GPS: 41.057135, -100.542542
Elevation: 2707′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Free Nebraska boondocking spots. First come -> first served. No reservations accepted. Overall nice area. Campsite is just a hidden gravel parking lot that borders a small lake. It technically is wildlife reserve land so there are no trash cans or anything. Decent shade if it’s hot. Somewhat close to interstate 80 so if you are sleeping outside of your car or RV then you might consider ear plugs. There is a house near by but there is enough trees and bushes to have some privacy. No individual spots. I was here at the same time as some guy in his van. We just parked at opposite sides of the lot and kept to ourselves but there is no privacy if others park here. Good enough to stay a night if you dont want to pay for some place.
7. Brittenham Park
Address
Maxwell, Nebraska
GPS: 41.076511, -100.524192
Management: Public – city Park (Official)
Nebraska boondocking sites. I went to the city hall place and talked to the people inside and they said it was all free tent camping. I asked about RV’s and they just said they don’t have hook ups for RV’s. I would imagine you could stop in for the night if you didn’t need any hook ups. You can also call the city hall or office for more directions.
8. Pawnee Slough WMA

GPS: 41.125653, -100.902463
Elevation: 2858′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Birdwood Lake WMA is open all year. Free Nebraska boondocking spots. This campsite does not use a reservation system. First come, first served. Beautiful spot but right by a busy highway. Wildlife management area. The route getting here is very scenic with close up cows and horses. Better spot for RV / van than tent. Also it’s a hunting and fishing spot, I guess that means tent camp anywhere but wear orange? :/ It’s sundown so I’m going to car camp.
10. East Hershey WMA

3-399 South Crane View Road

Elevation: 2861′

Nebraska boondocking sites. This campsite does not use a reservation system. First come, first served. Little spot along the freeway. We parked in a little dirt lot next to the lake and the sign said East Hershey WMA. It looked a bit off from where the GPS locator is above. Lake was beautiful. Lots of little fish jumping at dusk. The parking lot looked like a place that teens might go to drink some beers and there was little bits of trash all over and the occasional beer, red bull, or soda can. Had the kids help clean it up.
11. Kelly Avery WMA

Free Nebraska camping places. Reservations are not accepted at this campsite. This is not a big rig area. The east end road does go back along the expressway side of the lake to the boat launch but if you were pulling a towed or TT you wouldn’t be turning around easily. Even on the side of the lake that runs along the Oregon trail road the spots are mainly for tents or maybe van or class B. Television and cell signal are good.

Address
156-198 Lamont Road

GPS: 41.141253, -101.059576
Elevation: 2940′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Nebraska boondocking sites. First come -> First Camped. Reservations not accepted. This place has been awesome! We’ve fished every day and caught something almost as often. It’s not as popular as the reservoir, which was perfect for us; a few bass boats and swimmers. No one bothered us and the boys (Ace, pitbull/mastiff and Hendrix, pitbull) has plenty of space to run and play and swim. The water is crystal clear. Only real downside is the freeway traffic; you can see the traffic and it can be kinda loud. But that’s the only thing that we can find to complain about. There’s a hay field on the opposite side of the lake; private property.
14. Clear Creek WMA

Address
Nebraska 2
Hyannis, Nebraska
GPS: 41.995149, -101.72948
Elevation: 3694′
Management: Public – Fish and Wildlife
Drove by here looking for a place to sleep: fugiddaboutit! This is a tiny, very sloped parking area (probably for fishing) right on Hwy 2, and the BNSF coaltrains [50 a night, at least] are rumblin’ along just across the small lake. See my review of DeFair WMA, less than 3 mi. south of here on Hwy Sixty One: MUCH better option.
16. DeFair Lake WMA

East Nebraska Boondocking Sites
In Nebraska, boondocking leads you to campsites tucked away in the rolling hills or along the banks of lovely rivers and reservoirs. You’ll have the state’s unspoiled wilderness to yourself as other adventurers head north to South Dakota or west to Wyoming.
Start with the national and state forests when deciding where to boondock in Nebraska. They’re strewn across the state’s northern reaches, providing easy access to the state’s vast, sparsely populated wilderness areas. Another great option is to visit national meadows. The majority of free campsites are found away from I-80.
Nebraska is one of the most underestimated camping and outdoor adventure destinations in the United States. On I-80, many travelers simply pass through. However, once you get off the freeway, you’ll be rewarded with a plethora of breathtaking natural scenery.

West Nebraska Camping Places
Nebraska is an excellent spot for boondocking. Whether you head to the Sandhills region in the southern part of the state or the remote grasslands in the north, you’re more likely to encounter local outdoor enthusiasts than tourists. The state’s legendary wide-open spaces offer exceptionally beautiful campsites and views that extend for miles.
Like its fellow Great Plains states to the north and south, Nebraska is largely a state without much change in elevation or extensive forested area. However, what it holds that those neighbors do not is an abundance of free camping, more than nearly any other state one would need to cross to get from the east to west in these United States.
Nebraska Dispersed camping is an excellent way to get away from technology and disconnect. Each dispersed site offers quick access to one or more of Nebraska’s most popular destinations.
