Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef chuck roast diced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 package store-bought puff pastry
  • 1 egg beaten

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • 9-inch (23 cm) deep-dish pie plate
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking brush

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced beef and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, rosemary, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir until it thickens, about 2 minutes.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the mixture to a 9-inch (23 cm) deep-dish pie plate.
  8. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and place it on top of the pie plate, pressing down the edges to seal.
  9. Brush the beaten egg over the top of the pastry.
  10. Bake the pie for 35-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
  11. Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Tips and Tricks

Prepping the ingredients beforehand will make the cooking process smoother.
Use a deep-dish pie plate to avoid the filling spilling over the edges.
Brushing the beaten egg on the pastry will give it a golden and shiny appearance.
Letting the pie cool for a few minutes before slicing will make it easier to cut and serve.
