Ingredients

For the meat filling:

  • 2 beef mince
  • 8 oz. bacon
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 cups cabbage finely shredded
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the pan-baked buns:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Prepare the meat filling.

  • a. In a large mixing bowl, combine the beef mince, diced bacon, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, curry powder, shredded cabbage, Chinese five-spice powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  • b. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the meat filling marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Prepare the pan-baked buns.

  • a. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  • b. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
  • c. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • d. Place the dough back into the mixing bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the grill or barbecue to medium-high heat.

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a round bun.

Cook the buns on the preheated grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through.

While the buns are cooking, shape the meat filling into patties of desired size and thickness.

Grill the meat patties on the preheated grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until cooked to your preferred doneness.

Once the buns and meat patties are cooked, assemble the hamburgers by placing a meat patty between each bun.

Serve the Australian Barbecued Chinese Hamburgers with additional toppings such as fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and your choice of condiments.

              Notes

Use a food processor to quickly shred the cabbage for the meat filling.
Make the pan-baked buns in advance and reheat them on the grill before assembling the burgers.
Double the recipe and freeze extra buns for future use.
Experiment with different seasonings and spices to customize the flavor of the meat filling.
Cook the meat patties on a preheated grill to ensure even cooking and delicious charred flavors.
Serve the Australian Barbecued Chinese Hamburgers with a variety of condiments and toppings to add extra flavors and textures.
