Ingredients

  • 4 green plantains
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Frying pan
  • Tostonera (or a flat surface such as a cutting board and a can)
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Peel the plantains and slice them into rounds, about 1 inch thick.
  2. Heat up enough oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat to cover the bottom of the pan.
  3. Fry the plantain slices for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are lightly golden and crispy.
  4. Remove the plantains from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
  5. Using a tostonera (or a flat surface such as a cutting board and a can), flatten the plantains into thin discs.
  6. Dip the flattened plantains into a bowl of salted water and then return them to the hot oil.
  7. Fry the plantains for an additional 2-3 minutes on each side until they are crispy and golden brown.
  8. Remove the plantains from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

Make sure to use green plantains as they are more starchy and less sweet than ripe plantains.
Use a tostonera to flatten the plantains easily, but if you don't have one, you can use a flat surface such as a cutting board and a can.
Be careful when frying the plantains, as they can burn quickly. Keep an eye on them and adjust the heat as necessary.
