Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Frying pan
  • Tongs
  • Paper towels
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board (if using toppings)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Gradually add the milk while mixing until the dough forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the dough and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into flat discs.
  • Fry the discs in the hot oil until they're golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Remove the fried bread from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve the fry bread warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

Tips and Tricks

Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying the dough. If it's not hot enough, the fry bread will absorb too much oil and become greasy.
If the dough is sticky, dust your hands and work surface with flour.
You can add flavorings to the dough, such as herbs or spices, to make it more interesting.
Serve with toppings like butter, jam, honey, cinnamon sugar, or savory spreads.
