German Bavarian Pot Roast

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 4 lbs. beef chuck roast boneless
  • 1-1/4 cups water
  • 1 12 ozs. light beer
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 8 ozs. tomato sauce 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 cups tomatoes stewed
  • 1 clove garlic smashed
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice ground
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 cups mushrooms ground

Instructions

Heat the canola oil in a large pot over medium heat.

  • a. Place the pot on the stove.
  • b. Pour the canola oil into the pot.

Sear the boneless beef chuck roast on all sides until browned.

  • a. Carefully place the beef chuck roast in the hot oil.
  • b. Allow each side of the roast to cook until browned.

Add water, light beer, and beer or beef broth to the pot.

  • a. Pour the water into the pot.
  • b. Open the can of light beer and pour it into the pot.
  • c. Measure the beer or beef broth and add it to the pot.

Stir in tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, smashed garlic, chopped onion, sugar, white vinegar, salt, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and ground allspice.

  • a. Open the can of tomato sauce and pour it into the pot.
  • b. Add the stewed tomatoes to the pot.
  • c. Smash the garlic clove and add it to the pot.
  • d. Chop the onion and add it to the pot.
  • e. Measure the sugar and add it to the pot.
  • f. Measure the white vinegar and add it to the pot.
  • g. Measure the salt and add it to the pot.
  • h. Measure the ground cinnamon and add it to the pot.
  • i. Measure the ground ginger and add it to the pot.
  • j. Measure the ground allspice and add it to the pot.

Mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry and add it to the pot.

  • a. Measure the cornstarch and place it in a small bowl.
  • b. Add a small amount of water to the bowl and stir until the cornstarch is dissolved.
  • c. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the pot.

Add the bay leaf, pepper, and ground ginger to the pot.

  • a. Drop the bay leaf into the pot.
  • b. Measure the pepper and add it to the pot.
  • c. Measure the ground ginger and add it to the pot.

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for several hours until the beef is tender.

  • b. Place the lid on the pot, ensuring it is fully covered.
  • c. Allow the pot roast to cook on low heat for several hours until the beef is tender.
