Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 onions large, sliced
  • 8 iceberg lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 beetroot thinly sliced
  • 8 bacon slices
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preparing the Ingredients:

  • a. Start by slicing the onions into thin rounds.
  • b. Slice the tomatoes into thin slices.
  • c. Drain the sliced beetroot from the tin.
  • d. Wash and pat dry the lettuce leaves.
  • e. Set aside all the prepared ingredients.

Cooking the Bacon:

  • a. Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  • b. Place the bacon slices in the skillet and cook until crispy, turning occasionally.
  • c. Once cooked, transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
  • d. Keep the cooked bacon warm.

Grilling the Beef Patties:

  • a. Preheat the barbecue grill to medium-high heat.
  • b. Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions and shape them into patties.
  • c. Season each patty with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • d. Place the patties on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until desired doneness.
  • e. Remove the patties from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.

Grilling the Onions:

  • a. Place the sliced onions on the grill, directly on the grates.
  • b. Cook the onions for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are softened and slightly charred.
  • c. Remove the grilled onions from the grill and set aside.

Assembling the Burgers:

  • a. Slice the hamburger buns in half.
  • b. Spread barbecue sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
  • c. Place a beef patty on top of the sauce.
  • d. Add a slice of bacon on top of the patty.
  • e. Layer with grilled onions, tomato slices, beetroot slices, and lettuce leaves.
  • f. Finish assembling the burger with the top half of the bun.

Serving the Australian Barbecued Burgers:

  • a. Serve the burgers immediately while they are still warm.
  • b. You can serve them with additional barbecue sauce on the side, if desired.

Notes

Shape the beef patties slightly larger than the hamburger buns, as they shrink during cooking.
Make an indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while grilling.
Brush the barbecue sauce on the buns just before assembling the burgers for a tangy flavor.
Preheat the barbecue grill thoroughly to ensure proper cooking of the beef patties.
Use a spatula to flip the beef patties only once during grilling to avoid losing juices.
Experiment with different types of cheese, such as cheddar or Swiss, to add extra flavor to the burgers.
