10. Bosnian Uštipci Recipe

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Skillet or frying pan
  • Paper towels for draining excess oil

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • Additional oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  • Add the warm water and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil to the bowl. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for about 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll them into balls. Flatten each ball slightly with your fingers.
  • Carefully place the flattened dough balls into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
  • Remove the fried uštipci from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
  • Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough balls until all the uštipci are cooked.
  • Serve the uštipci warm with your favorite toppings, such as ajvar, kajmak, or sour cream.

Notes

Tips and Tricks

Make sure the water is warm, but not too hot, or it could kill the yeast.
Don't overcrowd the skillet when frying the uštipci, as this can cause them to cook unevenly.
If the dough is too sticky, add a little bit more flour. If it is too dry, add a little bit more water.
